Manchester United are up against it against Manchester City on Wednesday night and Marcus Rashford has called upon the Old Trafford crowd to have their emotions running high against the Premier League champions. United are the distant underdogs against their local rivals as City are bidding for three points to take them back to the top of the Premier League table.

The Red Devils are coming off a demoralising 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Everton on Sunday, but they need three points themselves as they fight for a Champions League spot. United are currently in sixth but could leapfrog Arsenal into fifth, depending on what the Gunners do at Wolves on Wednesday evening.

Rashford knows what the task at hand is against Pep Guardiola’s men, but believes that a special atmosphere could be enough to swing the game United’s way.

‘United vs City and United vss Liverpool mean the most to every United player and every United fan,’ Rashford said in an interview with United Review. ‘But, as a player, you have to understand that every game in the league is for three points and, whether you’re playing against Everton or Chelsea, they all have the exact same importance as when you play City or Liverpool. It’s the emotions which are a bit different.

‘I know the fans are always emotionally attached to this game, like we are, and I’d just say always keep that feeling and we’ll do our best to get the three points.’ Paul Pogba offered a similar sentiment, describing playing in derby matches as ‘beautiful’ as he prepares for the battle with City.

The match against Manchester City could see the club not only have a major say in the title race, but also gain ground on the other teams like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Spurs all battling for the final Champions League spots.
